Okay here it goes! Khalid's allowing me to see his memories of that time. So it won't be all on my side.
Hiking through a mountain forest, Diana Corrine Wentworth-Mackenzie, pauses as she catches sight of a beautiful lake glistening in the moonlight. She sits down upon the bank and stares thoughfully into the water. All of my friends have lifemates. They all seem so happy, and I am so lonely.
She sighs and leans back on the ground. I wish I had my own lifemate. Someone to laugh with. Someone to hold me in his arms when I am sad.
She closes her eyes and dreams of who her soulmate might be. Of where he is. Of when he will come to her.
Little did she know that her mental whispers and wishes had traveled from her soul over many miles of mountains and deserts and cities until it reached the innermost soul of a dark and brooding Carpathian male, living throughout an ancient but lovely city.
*****
Khalid Hassan Rahul was stalking the darkest of alleys and streets of Mumbai for prey. Just one more night, then I will go and meet the dawn. I cannot survive much longer without giving in. He said to himself.
Out of the corner of his eye he caught a vagabond trying to sneak up on him. He could see himself in the man's eyes. A rich man out here was looking for trouble.
He mentally reached out to the man's mind and bade him to lay down his weapon and come to him. The man did as he was told under the compulsion, his eyes glassy and unfocused.
Khalid tilted the man's head to the side, and ignoring the rank scent permeatting from the man, lowered his head and drank. The sweet nectar of life.
While feeding he felt a whisper in his dark, dark soul. The urge to give in, to kill nearly overwhelmed him.
But something was there, something he couldn't put a name to held him back.
He lifted his head as a voice came into his mind, his soul. It said, I am so lonely. I wish I had my own lifemate. Someone to laugh with. Someone to hold me in his arms when I am sad.
That voice brought back a flood of feelings, colors that he had not felt nor seen for over 1,000 years.
Lifemate! Mine! An inner voice said to his soul. He mentally followed the trail of that musical sounding voice back to the mind of the owner.
He vowed that no matter how long or how far he would have to travel, he would find her. He now had a purpose to live for. His lifemate, his destiny.
He closed the wound in the vagabond's neck, and lowered him to the ground with a memory of a severe beating.
He walked toward the eastern outskirts of the city. To where the soil was the richest. Not as rich as his father's homeland, though. Recalling a memory he thought lost of his father, Ekram, as he allowed him to touch the soil he had brought with him from his homeland, the Carpathian Mountains. And his mother, Umika. She was so kind, so beautiful. Until that fateful day when the Turks attacked.
Khalid was in forgien land, hunting an amatuer vampire. Far from his parents when they were attacked. But he still felt a gut-wrenching feeling that his parents were no longer on this earth.
He had rushed back to his home in India. Only to find his parents killed in a ritual vampire slaying. They're bodies were burnt by the sun beyond recognition, but he still knew it was them.
He mourned the loss of his parents, his innocence. He was surprised to feel tears rolling down his face. He could not ever remember crying in his whole life except on the day his parents died and seeing their bodies with their heads severed off and stakes through their hearts.
He called for the ground to arise to make a place for him to rest.
As the sun rose over the mountains, and his body became leaden within the ground where he rested. He vowed to himself and to his lifemate, Tonight! Tonight when I rise I will search the world for you, saname. I will never leave your side.
He slept as the message drifted along the mental trail. To his lifemate.
