... or at least one of them. To you here, I present my latest and greatest work:
Paternal Guardian
Fret not, my little one
Father is here now,
To ease your pains and chase away all your fears,
Come to me, and let me read you a story about unicorns and faeries,
Climb up into my lap, and we'll read the next page of your favorite book...
Go on, my child
Don't you cry,
I'm right behind you,
It's time for your first day of school,
Don't you worry, I packed an extra-special lunch, just for you
And don't let the mean kids get you down,
Keep your chin up, and you'll do fine
When you get home, we can wade through that math homework,
And when it's bed time, we'll read another page, and if that won't do, we'll read two...
Don't go just yet, I haven't told you I love you,
Or told you I will be late picking you up today because of work,
And you didn't remember to say goodbye...
But I watch you walk with your best friend, as you start your first day of junior high,
And can't help but smile and be proud,
'Cause I've got the best little girl, around
When we get back home, I'll share some hot coacoa with you before bed, and if you want read a chapter or three, from your new book...
I barely had time to say goodbye this morning, as I ran out the door, late for work,
But I know that you won't forget I love you, even though I can seem mean
I made sure to leave you a few extra dollars for your lunch today,
After all, you deserve a special one on your first day of High School
When I get home, I'll help you with that Algebra problem
And then we can catch a bite to eat and watch T.V., even though that show you love makes no sense to me,
After that, we'll share some hot coacoa, and retire for the night...
Go on, walk across that stage!
Shine like the star I know you are!
Yes! You've done it! You graduated from High School!
I knew you could,
Even through all those nights of calculus and physics,
I knew you'd make it!
And now you move your tassle...
You are officially graduated
And I can't help but cry,
Because I'm so proud of you
When we get home, you'll be asleep, and I'll carry you to your room,
I'll kiss you goodnight, and tell you how proud I am of you...
In a few weeks, you'll move away, to college
And leave dear old dad behind, to wonder what he's gonna do now...
He'll write you,
He'll call you,
And he'll miss you,
And when you come home to do laundry, he'll hoarde your attention and company,
Just like you did to him, so long ago...
