Blurb:
Fiery and strong, Kara had always done things her own way. Gifted with magick and a stubborn streak a mile wide, she was a born healer, sent out by her people as her older sister had been to check on the village across the Baylo Sea. There is trouble brewing an ancient evil that had yet to be vanquished. It was dangerous to go alone but it was a burden she’d gladly accepted. Never in her life had she been challenged by anyone else, that is, till she meets Zachius a warrior of his people and friend to Dartian.
Zachius, like Dartian, is a shape-shifter who hides his secret from the world. He is a loner who answers to no one; pride and strength run hard through his veins. When he is asked by Dartian and Saleene to find Kara, to keep her safe from the minions of Jacobe, he reluctantly agrees till he hears Saleene’s description of her sister. Suddenly the dreams of the woman who has haunted his nights for the past months come flooding back to him. Can Zachius make it to Kara’s side to save her before it’s too late? Has Zachius met his soulmate in Kara or his damnation to an eternal lifetime of chaos? Soon they will have to make the decision to follow their hearts or forfeit their lives in a battle for their body and souls.
Excerpt:
Her voice rang out into the night. “This isn’t funny Gaaby, where are you guys at?”
Deep down she knew her cries couldn’t be heard. She continued to sprint through the foliage, calling for her friends, hoping to hear some faint sound from ahead. Each step forward drew a cold veil of foreboding across her soul. For as long as she could remember, she could sense when death was near and the call of it was so strong that she fell to her knees, her head reeling from the onslaught of emotions that flowed from the cool breeze. Kara placed a torch into the soft ground in an attempt to shed light on her surroundings, to gain some semblance of where she was.
Slowly the orange glow of the flames began to spread across the area; the sudden light pushing the shadows back into the forest. Her eyes adjusted to the increase in light, a stifled cry lodged in her throat as her vision took in the wriggling form of her friend gasping desperately for air. Gaaby’s eyes, wide with fear, tore into Kara’s mind and burned the image of Gaaby’s ashen face onto her soul.
“Help...me...please...” Her words, mere broken whispers barely audible, were laced with raw terror. The ominous glow of the light flickered across her pale skin, showing the depths of the injuries she’d suffered. Crimson blood flowed from her wounds; the sight was almost the undoing of Kara’s composure. The state of her friend’s battered body drew the breath from her lungs; her heart tore in two, knowing that Gaaby’s life was slowly draining in front of her. She attempted to move, her legs like heavy weights attached to the ground. From behind Gaaby a flicker in the shadows caught Kara’s attention, her eyes narrowed to see what was there.
The moment her gaze found the source of the sound bile rose in her throat. Time slowed down to a small crawl, her mind reeling at the carnage in front of her. Her eyes darted to the darkest part of the area where she met with a red rimmed stare. Hatred burned deep within the depths of its soulless eyes. A malevolent smile crossed its placid skin to reveal canine teeth protruding from its mouth. The impact of its stare sent Kara’s stomach into convulsions, her eyes watered as the stench of its putrid breath reached her nostrils. She moved to cover her ears from the cries of her dead companions—something she knew would haunt her nightmares.
“No.” Her whispered denial fell on dead ears. It was pure evil. It emanated the stench of death from its every pore; its diseased mind buckled her knees. Desperate to wade through the onslaught of emotions she’d captured from her friends, she tried to reach Gaaby, to save at least one soul from the unending torture this fiend would inflict. As she inched closer to the still figure of her friend, the ghoul’s talon-like fingers laced around Gaaby’s fragile neck and pulled her limp body into the shadows, away from the light. A soft crack of bone being broken drifted on the wind and back to Kara.
